update: he has explicitly asked me to take it down while he's showing the unit next to mine today, and included some vague statements that left me very unsettled, and I responded saying that I would take it down for today and "while he's showing the unit," but that I would like to have a conversation with him regarding the harm that could be done by the sign and what his concerns are. He hasn't responded and I'm very uneasy.

I think he is an anxious old man who's worried about keeping a neutral appearance to avoid making potential tenants uncomfortable. I'm hoping that his lack of response is more because he wasn't prepared for me to argue back and now hopes that the conflict will go away if he ignores it. I've put the sign back up for now, and I guess we'll just have to see what happens.
