In the last few hours of this day, I have decided to share this excerpt of a thing that I'm trying so so so SO hard to make good. This is for my Fandom Trumps Hate bidder, and features Gimli doing a poor job of balancing the roles of adoring husband and Much Idolized Older Cousin.

It was not polite to question, but Uni could not resist it. “And you truly love him?” they burst out. “An elf?”

“You doubt that I know my own heart?” Now Gimli’s voice held a hint of warning, and Uni shook their head in shame.

“No, no it is not that, it is only” – They did know basic rules of etiquette; they swore it, but the words were coming out unbidden even as some part of their mind watched in horror. “He is so... stringy.”

Gimli threw back his head and roared; his laughter echoed off the stone walls. “I am telling him you said that.”

This story is speaking to me on an intellectual level-- as in, I am very intrigued to see where it goes and how it shapes up-- but unfortunately my interest in it is NOT translating to the lively writing I was hoping for. This bit is one of the few pieces that has even a modicum of life in it. But I'm holding out hope, and I've been working on it steadily, so maybe it'll come together one of these days.

I hate when that happens to a story! It's so frustrating. Sometimes I find it helps to change up my music soundtrack -- so for example when I write Sherlock fiction I tend to listen to David Bowie, but if the story isn't flowing I will change to NIN or Leonard Cohen and often that jiggles another gear in my brain/writing. Legolas/Gimli I usually write to Irish folk music (I KNOW I AM A CLICHE) but if I need to kick it up a notch, often The Pogues will get it done.

Ooh, that's really interesting! I haven't tried deliberate music choices like that-- though I find I can't really listen to music with words while writing; I'll get distracted by it and not be able to come up with words of my own. So either it has to be music that I didn't deliberately select (I use my youtube queue for this; that way I'm not picking the music and sort of stop noticing it after awhile except as background noise), or it has to be soft music without words. I always find it so interesting to hear about what kind of music inspires other people, though.

Sometimes -- esp if I'm writing dialogue -- I can't listen to music with words at all. And yeah, it has to be something I can background, so familiar music is better than unfamiliar, because I can tune out the words. :)
